A VERY ILLUSTRATED Q&A WITH ARTIST UNFORTUNATE PORTRAIT

As big fans of Unfortunate Portrait (i.e., Max Dower) and the exclusive sneaks he made for us last year, we just had to team up with the LA-based illustrator
again—this time on collectible tees featuring his punny, childlike doodles. Max was kind enough to answer a few questions for us recently, but instead of using words, he does what he does best: draws.

Who would be in your dream musical collab?

BEHIND THE DESIGN: MEET REWORKED VINTAGE EXPERT MARK KOLSKI OF AS EVER

121917_MWSM_FebSocial_040.jpg

Mark Kolski never thought he’d end up with his own clothing line, creating one-of-a-kind reworked vintage gems under the moniker As Ever. Upon first moving to NYC, he worked at a store selling western wear, then at an outdoor flea market dealing vintage clothes—gaining knowledge about sourcing he still uses today. From there, he moved on to producing commercial advertising, TV and film, before renovating restaurants (check out his handiwork at Dirty Bird, which Mark swears has the best fried chicken in NYC). The renovation thing stuck, until an arm injury forced him to make a change.

Madewell x Where I Was From: Meet the Duo Behind Our Latest Collab

Few things rival the feeling of slipping on a pair of jeans that fit perfectly…but if we had to come up with one, it’d be the feeling of stumbling upon an amazing vintage piece. One of our favorite sources for such pieces is Where I Was From, an expertly sourced vintage collection from Brooklyn-based friends and co-founders, Stacy Daily and Claire Lampert. We had a meeting to talk vintage denim with Stacy and Claire early last year, which led to the realization that we had to collaborate on an entire line—which is shoppable today. Here’s how it came together and how these two creative, vintage savants turned a moonlighting side-hustle into a dream full-time gig.

The “Je Ne Sais Quoi” of 4 Iconic French Pieces

sezane_editorial_5

That French women are effortlessly stylish isn’t a new idea to anyone, but as our Paris-born model Rebecca Dayan (that’s her, above) told us, it’s not entirely true. That lived-in dishabille is no accident—it’s basically heirloom style that’s passed down from grandmothers to moms to daughters. And our latest collaboration with Sézane wouldn’t be complete without four of those timeless styles that each generation’s lived in. But how’d these pieces reach icon status? And how are we wearing them now? To learn about their origins, we stopped by the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute collection (a massive archive of clothes from throughout history) and then strolled over to our photo shoot in Central Park to find out more.

Madewell + goop = The Jumpsuit You’ll Be Living In

8.18_160705_MWSM_AugSocial_536_insta

Denim Every Day. Three little words, one very big idea. Every morning for the past 23 days, we’ve unveiled one totally new, unexpected denim exclusive online. There’ve been denim sneakers you can only find here and an overalls-scented candle, and we (finally!) launched maternity jeans. And we saved one of the best for last: a laid-back jumpsuit created with our style-minded friends at goop. They’re as obsessed with the small stuff as we are (like choosing the perfect lightweight fabric and adding an easy drawstring waist). We also share a love for less-is-more simplicity, hence the easygoing shape and understated hardware. So how did two denim-loving groups merge their shared styles? We’ll let goop’s Fashion Director Laurie Trott—who, we might add, has 20+ years of fashion-world cred—explain.

Show + Tell: Sézane Designer Morgane Sézalory

140530_MWSM_Show+Tell_Morgane_163-edit

Parisian Morgane Sézalory’s designs for her line, Sézane, reflect her personal style ethos. First, every piece must have a “this was made just for you” effect and second, a well-stocked wardrobe shouldn’t include a million versions of any one thing. Her determination to create “the perfect black dress, the bag for all seasons, things that are both practical and quality” has garnered her a cult following in France. Her now-iconic La Superbe sweatshirt sold out within days when it was first released (do a quick Google search and you’ll see it on style bloggers, French editors and the like). Partnering with her on a 14-piece capsule collection—including a reissue of that very sweatshirt—felt natural for us, and we quite honestly can’t wait for Madewell et Sézane to arrive on Tuesday, October 21st. We went to visit Morgane in her hometown to understand the feverish obsession her designs provoke and the woman behind them.
